That's My Jam - Code Academy

At WLC, one of the panelists talked about a business he started that helped people learn how to code (referring to internet coding).  His speech inspired me to want to learn how to code because it is the language of the internet and I know it is a valuable job skill.  I also want to learn how to code so I can have the tools to build a website or app on my own and think that it would be empowering to not have to rely on templates.

After hearing this panelist, I started obsessing about finding a week in my schedule to go take coding classes from him in Chicago but knew it would be difficult to find any time until next summer. Then someone told me about Code Academy. Code academy is a free website where you can take basic coding lessons. in various types of scripts. After the various lessons there is also a sample project. I just signed up and took a few lessons - I LOVE it!

Below are a few screenshots of what the lessons look like. I am starting with the Web Fundamentals course but plan on taking more specific courses such as Javascript and PHP in the future.

In each lesson there are directions on the left side that you scroll through. The middle is the place for you to practice the lesson and type the code. The right is the screen that reflects the code that you type.
